Prevention of Problem Gambling via a SPF Lens: Applying the SPF to Problem Gambling

Description: During this session, we will discuss how the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) can be applied in problem gambling prevention. We will discuss the common risk and protective factors between problem gambling and other problem behaviors, walk through the SPF steps as to their application with problem gambling, and discuss a few strategies that can be used with limited resources.

Regional Training on Opioid Misuse - May 3rd

Description: The Iowa Department of Public Health's Prevention of Opioid Misuse in Women trainings are increasing the awareness and expanding the education of professionals who provide services to women across the lifespan. The training includes education on the Guidelines for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain, the identification and screening of opioid misuse and opioid use disorder, and the referrals and resources in your area.

The Iowa Prevention of Opioid Misuse in Women Program is a three year (08/01/2017-06/30/2020) grant awarded to the Iowa Department of Public Health Division of Behavioral Health (IDPH) by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Each training will focus on the specific vulnerabilities women encounter in the opioid epidemic.

Audience: These trainings are available to all community services providers and does not require the attendee to have a specific background or education level.

Fundamentals of HIV Prevention Counseling - May

Description: This two-day workshop will demonstrate effective, client-centered counseling strategies to assist clients in reducing their risks of acquiring or transmitting HIV, hepatitis, and other sexually transmitted diseases. Participants will learn how to personalize counseling messages and develop realistic and incremental risk reduction plans with their clients. This workshop will also cover pre/post-test counseling, giving test results, and locating appropriate resources for clients who test positive.

Audience: This workshop is designed for persons working in HIV/Hepatitis/STD prevention and care, nurses, clinicians, social workers, community educators, substance abuse treatment counselors, and other professional counselors.

Link Between Opioid Use and Problem Gambling

Description: Clients in treatment for Opioid Use Disorders, particularly those in medication assisted treatment have been found to have extremely high rates of co-occurring gambling disorder.  This webinar will review the research on the co-occurrence of gambling disorder and opioid use disorder, focusing on both quantitative and qualitative research that has sought to understand this connection. Transcripts from clients in medication assisted treatment will be used to illustrate the role gambling plays in their lives and recoveries.  Strategies for screening and treating gambling issues among those in treatment for opioid use disorders will be discussed.
